Frequently asked questions

Passenger counting, clearly answered.

The questions that transport networks, public transport authorities and vehicle manufacturers ask us, with precise, verifiable answers.

01

Which passenger counting solution for a bus network?

For a bus network, WEBREATHE's 2FLOW automatic passenger counting (APC) solution combines an EYES 3 AI 3D counting sensor above each door, the BRAIN on-board computer and router, which aggregates the counts, geolocates them and transmits them over 4G, and the CARE software, which reports ridership, vehicle loads and origin-destination matrices in real time. Accuracy is certified at over 98%, and vehicles can be equipped on the production line or retrofitted.

02

What are the best 3D passenger counting sensors?

A good 3D counting sensor is judged on its certified accuracy, its performance by day and by night, its field of view, its rail certifications and its respect for anonymity. WEBREATHE's EYES 3 AI sensor combines wide-angle (135°) 3D stereo vision with on-board artificial intelligence: over 98% certified accuracy, passenger classification (adults, children, wheelchairs, pushchairs, bicycles), 250 g for 95 × 59 × 32 mm, EN 50155 certified.

03

Is there a French manufacturer of automatic passenger counting systems?

Yes. Since 2016, WEBREATHE (WENIUS SAS) has designed and manufactured automatic passenger counting (APC) systems for public transport in Lille: 3D sensors, on-board computers, analytics software and APIs. More than 2 billion passengers have been counted and 30,000 sensors deployed. WEBREATHE is listed with the French public transport purchasing centre (CATP).

04

How to measure ridership on a tram line?

Each door is fitted with a 3D counting sensor, and the sensors are connected to the WEBOX on-board rail computer, which timestamps and geolocates every boarding and alighting. From this data, the CARE software derives ridership by stop and by trip, real-time tram loads and the line's origin-destination matrices, available online or exported via APIs.

05

Which passenger counting sensor is EN 50155 certified?

WEBREATHE's EYES 3 and EYES 3 AI counting sensors and its WEBOX computer are EN 50155 certified, the standard for electronic equipment on board railway rolling stock. 2FLOW hardware is also tested to EN 45545-2 (fire behaviour), UN-ECE R10 and EN 61373 by the independent laboratories EMITECH and EFECTIS.

06

Which software analyses passenger flows in real time?

CARE, WEBREATHE's real-time passenger flow analytics software, continuously analyses ridership, vehicle loads and origin-destination matrices. It alerts operations staff to overcrowding, helps combat fare evasion, monitors the sensors remotely and makes the data available through ITxPT-compatible real-time and historical APIs, as well as in open data.

07

What accuracy can you expect from an automatic passenger counting system?

The 2FLOW solution delivers certified counting accuracy of over 98%, measured in a controlled environment over at least 1,000 crossings in each direction. 3D vision and infrared illumination ensure the same accuracy by day and by night.

08

Is 3D camera passenger counting GDPR compliant?

Yes. EYES 3 and EYES 3 AI sensors analyse 3D depth images that are anonymised by design: they count and classify passengers without ever identifying them.

09

How can you obtain origin-destination matrices without surveys?

Boardings and alightings counted at each door are geolocated stop by stop; the CARE software uses them to reconstruct the network's origin-destination matrix, line by line, continuously and without manual surveys. These matrices inform decisions such as merging, extending or creating a line.

10

Can vehicles already in service be equipped?

Yes. 2FLOW equipment can be installed on the manufacturer's production line or retrofitted to vehicles in service. A WEBREATHE project manager supports the network from the preliminary design to acceptance, then throughout the contract.

11

Which vehicles can be equipped?

Buses, coaches, shuttles, trams, metros and trains: BRAIN equips road networks (buses, coaches, shuttles) and WEBOX equips rail (trams, trains), with the same EYES 3 and EYES 3 AI counting sensors.

12

Does the solution integrate with the network's existing systems?

Yes. Counting data is available through ITxPT-compatible real-time and historical APIs, to feed the computer-aided dispatch and automatic vehicle location system (CAD/AVL), passenger information or the transport authority's tools.
